The barrel is dismantled and the staves are cleaned up with a rotating wire brush. The insides are usually quite rotten and beautifully textured. The outsides are still good solid oak. Each stave has the edges cut and then several of them are glued together to form a backing. The ceramic design is then planned so that it blends nicely with the backing.
